E:D Black Box
The original Python is a dependable, enduring combat medium: five hardpoints, ten optional internals and a genuinely tough hull, all for less than most dedicated fighters. It's slower than its rivals and its DPS ceiling trails the focused specialists — including its own Mk II successor — but no medium-pad hull matches its blend of solid firepower, strong tank and the freedom to haul, mine or explore in the same fit.
This ship's 1–100 suitability rating reflects its fully-engineered fit for this role, scored against every ship in the role. See how ships are rated.
The Python is one of Elite Dangerous's most beloved ships, and for good reason: it does almost everything competently. As a combat hull it brings three large and two medium hardpoints, ten optional internals and a tough frame with strong shields and heavy armour — a roomy, durable brawler that can also haul cargo or mine when the mood takes you.
Its weakness is focus and pace. It's slow and turns ponderously, and its combat ceiling sits below the dedicated fighters — most pointedly its own successor, the Python Mk II, which adds a fourth large hardpoint and sharper combat tuning. But the original Python remains a tough, flexible, affordable medium that fights well enough while doing three other jobs besides.
Versatile combat play: Hazardous RES, conflict zones and pirate massacres for a pilot who also wants to haul, mine or run missions in the same hull without buying a second ship.
Four things make the Python a capable combat medium:
It's slow, turns poorly and its combat ceiling is below the focused fighters — most directly the Python Mk II, which adds a fourth large hardpoint and combat-tuned handling for a higher price. The original Python's case is versatility and value: it fights well while also hauling, mining and exploring, which the specialists can't.
Three large hardpoints, the strongest base shield of the classic combat mediums and ten optionals carry an 83; ponderous agility is the limiter.
The 83/100 headline is a verdict against the combat role's priority-ordered factors. Each factor carries a weight (its share of 100); this hull earns part of each based on how it performs against the whole field. The points sum to the rating.
| Role factor | Score | Why this score |
|---|---|---|
| Hardpoints | 26/30 | Three Large plus two Medium mounts is a heavy main battery — enough to kill anything a RES or CZ fields. But it trails the four-Large Mk II and the huge-mount Fer-de-Lance, capping its DPS ceiling below the focused specialists. |
| Power distributor | 10/10 | Class-7 distributor gives ample headroom to run three large guns plus shields and boost without starvation — strong for a medium, and the priority A-rate since the large battery drains it fastest. |
| Shield | 14/15 | ~294 MJ base shield is the highest of the classic combat mediums; engineered onto a bi-weave with two boosters it reaches ~1,100+ MJ. Tanks well even with zero military slots. |
| Armour & internals | 13/15 | 468 base armour and ten optional internals (6·6·6·5·5·4·3·3·2·1) give deep room to stack HRPs and cell banks to ~2,200+ effective armour. The absence of any military slots is the only structural gap. |
| Agility | 10/20 | 234 m/s cruise / 306 m/s boost on a 350 t hull, with ponderous turning — the clear weakness. It plays as a tough anchor, not a chaser, and the focused fighters all out-manoeuvre it. |
| Utility & flexibility | 10/10 | Four utility mounts feed chaff, heat sinks and shield boosters, and the ten optionals let one engineered hull re-role to hauling or mining in minutes — versatility no medium specialist matches. |
| Weighted total | 83/100 | Matches the headline suitability rating for this ship in this role. |
Weights are an editorial decomposition of the role's stated priority order — not an in-game formula. Bar length shows how fully each factor is earned; the longest factors carried the score, the shortest are where it gave points away. See how ships are rated.
Both tables rate ships for the combat role specifically. The role column is the hardpoint loadout — the raw weapon mounts behind the damage.

| Alliance Crusader | Medium | 1L 2M 3S | SLF bay; 3 crew; military slotsSlower; fewer big guns | 80 |
In the medium combat class the Python is the versatile veteran. The specialists out-fight it — especially its own Mk II — but none matches its blend of solid firepower, strong tank, deep internals and the freedom to haul or mine in the same hull. It's the combat medium for pilots who want one ship to do everything.
| Ship | Class | Hardpoints | Pros & cons vs Python | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Federal Corvette | Large | 2H 1L 2M 2S | The combat apex; firepower and tank without peerFederal rank; ~187M Cr; large pad | 98 |
| Imperial Cutter | Large | 1H 2L 4M | Vast shields and firepowerImperial rank; poor agility; large pad | 91 |
| Anaconda | Large | 1H 3L 2M 2S | Eight hardpoints; vast internals; also versatilePonderous; costly; large pad | 88 |
| Vulture | Small | 2L | Small-pad agility; cheapTwo guns; far less room and tank | 80 |
| Cobra Mk V | Small | 3M 2S | Fast small-pad all-rounder; cheapSmall-ship guns and tank | 78 |
For more combat power, the Anaconda is the Python's large-pad big brother — the versatile-warship concept at scale. Until you want a large pad, the Python delivers a tough, flexible combat medium that doubles as a hauler, miner or explorer, for a fraction of any large ship's cost.
At ~55.3M Cr the Python is mid-to-upper priced, with no rank or permit gate. Its deep internals mean a full combat fit adds up, but because it re-roles so readily, many commanders treat one engineered Python as several ships — spreading the cost across combat, hauling and mining.
If pure combat is the goal, the Python Mk II is the sharper (and pricier) tool; if you want one tough, flexible hull for everything including a good fight, the original Python is the value pick.
Engineer one Python and it becomes a fighter, a hauler and a miner by swapping optionals — the original Python's enduring appeal is doing several jobs, combat among them, in one affordable hull.
A tough, versatile combat fit using the deep optionals to tank. Initial is buy-only; A-rated is the combat-ready baseline; Engineered applies the house combat pattern. Swap optionals for cargo or mining kit to re-role between fights.

| Hardpoints | ||||
| Large 1 | 3E Pulse Laser (Gimballed) | 3C Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | G5 Overcharged + Corrosive Shell | Primary large multi-cannon; the single Corrosive Shell strips armour resistance for the whole battery. |
| Large 2 | 3C Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | 3C Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | G5 Overcharged + Auto Loader | Second large multi-cannon; Auto Loader removes reloads so its DPS never stops. |
| Large 3 | 3C Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | 3C Beam Laser (Gimballed) | G5 Efficient + Thermal Vent | Large beam for shield-stripping; Thermal Vent vents heat so it runs cold under sustained fire. |
| Medium 1 | 2F Pulse Laser (Gimballed) | 2D Beam Laser (Gimballed) | G5 Efficient + Thermal Vent | Buy a cheap pulse, swap to a Thermal-Vent beam once A-rated for heat-free shield work. |
| Medium 2 | 2F Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | 2F Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | G5 Overcharged + Auto Loader | Medium multi-cannon adds sustained kinetic DPS; Auto Loader keeps it topped up. |
| Utility Mounts | ||||
| Utility 1 | 0E Shield Booster | 0A Shield Booster | G5 Heavy Duty + Super Capacitors | First shield booster; Heavy Duty multiplies the bi-weave's raw MJ — the cheapest large gain in shield strength. |
| Utility 2 | — | 0A Shield Booster | G5 Heavy Duty + Super Capacitors | Second Heavy-Duty booster; diminishing returns set in but it still pays on a no-military-slot hull. |
| Utility 3 | — | 0I Chaff Launcher | G1 Ammo Capacity (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Ammo Capacity adds chaff salvos. Chaff spoils gimballed and turreted fire. |
| Utility 4 | — | 0I Heat Sink Launcher | G1 Ammo Capacity (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Ammo Capacity adds heat-sink charges. Dumps heat for silent running and Thermal-Vent resets. |
| Core Internals | ||||
| Bulkheads | Lightweight Alloy | Military Grade Composite | G5 Heavy Duty + Deep Plating | |
| Power Plant | 7E Power Plant | 7A Power Plant | G5 Overcharged + Thermal Spread | Powers three large guns, a big shield and cell banks; Overcharged adds headroom, Thermal Spread bleeds the extra heat. |
| Thrusters | 6E Thrusters | 6A Thrusters | G5 Dirty Drive Tuning + Drag Drives | A-rated + Dirty Drives recover what mobility the heavy hull allows. |
| Frame Shift Drive | 5E Frame Shift Drive | 5A Frame Shift Drive | G3 Increased Range + Mass Manager | A-rated to move the hull between fights and re-roles; only G3 range — combat needs no jump monster. |
| Life Support | 4E Life Support | 4D Life Support | G5 Lightweight (no experimental effect) | D-rate to save mass, Lightweight trims more; life support has no experimental effect. |
| Power Distributor | 7E Power Distributor | 7A Power Distributor | G5 Charge Enhanced + Super Conduits | A-rate this FIRST — three large guns plus boost drain the class-7 distributor faster than anything else. |
| Sensors | 6E Sensors | 6D Sensors | G5 Lightweight (no experimental effect) | Drop to D and go Lightweight; combat needs no sensor range, so save the mass. |
| Fuel Tank | 5C Fuel Tank | 5C Fuel Tank | (No blueprint available) | Stock C tank; fuel capacity is fixed and cannot be engineered. |
| Optional Internals | ||||
| Size 6 | 6E Shield Generator | 6C Bi-Weave Shield Generator | G5 Reinforced + Hi-Cap | Bi-weave regenerates fast under fire; Reinforced maximises its MJ and Hi-Cap adds more. |
| Size 6 | 6E Cargo Rack | 6A Shield Cell Bank | G4 Specialised (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Specialised cuts the cell bank's heat and power spike. Burst shield healing for emergencies. |
| Size 6 | — | 5D Hull Reinforcement | G5 Heavy Duty + Deep Plating | Hull reinforcement caps at size 5, so a 5D HRP under-fills this size-6 slot for max effective armour. |
| Size 5 | — | 5D Hull Reinforcement | G5 Heavy Duty + Deep Plating | Second Heavy-Duty HRP at full size 5; armour stacks linearly. |
| Size 5 | — | 5A Shield Cell Bank | G4 Specialised (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Specialised cuts the cell bank's heat and power spike. Burst shield healing for emergencies. |
| Size 4 | — | 4D Module Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | Module Reinforcement spreads penetrating-hit damage across internals; not engineerable. |
| Size 3 | — | 3D Hull Reinforcement | G5 Heavy Duty + Deep Plating | More Heavy-Duty hull where the slot allows. |
| Size 3 | — | 3A Shield Cell Bank | G4 Specialised (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Specialised cuts the cell bank's heat and power spike. Burst shield healing for emergencies. |
| Size 2 | — | 2D Module Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | Second Module Reinforcement protects the cores; not engineerable. |
| Size 1 | — | 1D Hull Reinforcement | G5 Heavy Duty + Deep Plating | Optional / low-priority — Expanded Probe Scanning widens probe coverage. Maps planets for exploration data. |

The Python has no military slots but ten optionals to tank with. Its versatility means you can swap several of those optionals for cargo racks or mining kit and turn the combat ship into a hauler or miner in minutes.
Buy the hull and fit the largest shield a class-6 bay allows — a 6E Shield Generator, RES-ready immediately. Leave the stock Lightweight Alloy bulkheads in place — armour is a later spend. One 0E Shield Booster goes on the first utility mount; the other three utility slots stay empty until you A-rate.
Arm the large mounts with what you can afford — a cheap 3E Pulse Laser on the first, gimballed 3C Multi-Cannons on the other two — and the mediums with a 2F Pulse Laser and a 2F Multi-Cannon.
Keep a 6E Cargo Rack in the second class-6 bay so you can re-role on a whim; leave the remaining optionals empty (no hull or module reinforcement yet) until the A-rated pass fills them.
A-rating priority for a versatile combat medium:
Three large hardpoints demand the class-7 distributor before weapons — A-rate it, then upgrade to Military Grade bulkheads and tank into the deep optionals.

Material-heavy — standard combat G5s across three large guns plus a deep defensive suite. With a complete inventory this is spend, not farm. Ask for exact per-blueprint counts to verify reserves.
Approximate progression across the three states (figures are representative, not exact rolls):
| Stat | Initial | A-rated | Engineered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top speed (boost) | 306 m/s | 306 m/s | ~370 m/s |
| Shield (MJ) | ~410 | ~580 | ~1,100+ |
| Armour (eff.) | 468 | ~810 | ~2,200+ |
| Sustained DPS | high | high | high |
| Versatility | high | high | high |
Initial flies on stock Lightweight Alloy; A-rating swaps in Military Grade Composite bulkheads (armour ~810) and stacks Hull Reinforcements down to the size-1 slot. Engineered, the Python is a tough, flexible brawler: a 1,100 MJ shield, Heavy-Duty bulkheads and HRPs pushing effective armour past 2,200, and three sustained large guns. It stays slow — that's the trade — but it tanks beautifully and can re-role to hauling or mining whenever you like.
Any Haz RES or CZ suits it. Its versatility means you can combat-grind near your home base and re-role the same hull for a cargo or mining run without buying a second ship.
The original Python is the versatile veteran of medium combat: three large guns, strong shields, heavy armour and ten optionals, all on a hull that also hauls, mines and explores. It's slower and less focused than the modern specialists — including its own Mk II — but for a tough, flexible, affordable combat ship that does everything else too, it remains a classic for good reason.
