E:D Black Box
The Imperial Clipper trades hardpoints and tank for blistering speed and genuine agility. A capable, characterful large combat ship held back by only four hardpoints and a large-pad-only footprint — exceptional pace and handling for the class, mid-pack firepower and tank. Fly it fast, close on your terms, and disengage before the return fire lands.
This ship's 1–100 suitability rating reflects its fully-engineered fit for this role, scored against every ship in the role. See how ships are rated.
The Imperial Clipper is the speed merchant of the large class — a long, elegant Gutamaya hull that boosts to nearly 390 m/s and turns far better than its size suggests. As a combat ship it fields two large and two medium hardpoints, decent shields and a roomy nine-slot internal bay, and it uses its pace to fight on its own terms: close fast, strike, and disengage before the return fire lands.
Its quirks are real. Only four hardpoints cap its firepower below the other large warships, and despite its agility it requires a large pad — an awkward combination, since it has medium-ship handling but can't use medium pads. It also needs Imperial rank to buy. But as a fast, affordable, good-looking skirmisher that flies like nothing else its size, the Clipper has a devoted following.
Fast hit-and-run combat: skirmishing in conflict zones and RES, running down or escaping targets at will, and any fight where speed and repositioning beat standing and grinding. Also a fine fast Imperial-rank brawler.
Four things define the Clipper as a combat ship:
Four hardpoints and no military slots cap its firepower and tank well below the other large warships, and the large-pad-only footprint is a genuine nuisance for a ship that handles like a medium. It needs Imperial rank too. The Clipper wins on speed and style, not on firepower or toughness — it's a skirmisher, not a battleship.
Leads its class on speed and agility — fastest large hull at 388 m/s boost — but only four hardpoints (2L 2M) and no military slots cap firepower and tank to mid-pack.
The 79/100 headline is a verdict against the combat role's priority-ordered factors. Each factor carries a weight (its share of 100); this hull earns part of each based on how it performs against the whole field. The points sum to the rating.
| Role factor | Score | Why this score |
|---|---|---|
| Hardpoints | 21/30 | Only four mounts (2 Large, 2 Medium) — the fewest of any large warship and the rating's chief limiter, versus 8 on the Anaconda or 9 on the Type-10. Two large mounts give real main-battery punch on a fast pass, but total throw-weight sits below every other large hull. |
| Power distributor | 8/10 | Class-6 distributor, A-rated and Charge Enhanced with Super Conduits, sustains two large multi-cannons plus repeated boost — adequate for a four-gun fit, though no larger than the field's mid-tier. |
| Shield | 11/15 | Base shield ~186 MJ, reaching ~650 MJ engineered on a size-6 bi-weave plus two Heavy-Duty boosters. A serviceable hit-and-run buffer, but modest next to dedicated tanks and the Cutter's class-leading shields. |
| Armour & internals | 12/15 | Base armour 486 with a roomy nine optional internals (7·6·4·4·3·3·2·2·1) for HRPs and cells, but zero military slots holds the tank below large peers — reinforcement competes with shield and cargo space. |
| Agility | 19/20 | The fastest large ship in the game — 306/388 m/s stock, past 460 engineered — and turns like a heavy medium, holding guns on target far better than its 400 t size suggests. Role-leading for the class and the core of its case. |
| Utility & flexibility | 8/10 | Four utility mounts feed two shield boosters, chaff and a heat sink — a full defensive suite. Flexibility is clipped by the large-pad-only footprint despite medium-grade handling and the Imperial Baron rank gate. |
| Weighted total | 79/100 | Matches the headline suitability rating for this ship in this role. |
Weights are an editorial decomposition of the role's stated priority order — not an in-game formula. Bar length shows how fully each factor is earned; the longest factors carried the score, the shortest are where it gave points away. See how ships are rated.
Both tables rate ships for the combat role specifically. The role column is the hardpoint loadout — the raw weapon mounts behind the damage.
| Ship | Class | Hardpoints | Pros & cons vs Imperial Clipper | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Federal Corvette | Large | 2H 1L 2M 2S | Two huge mounts; capital agility; apex firepowerFederal Rear Admiral rank; ~187M Cr | 98 |
| Imperial Cutter | Large | 1H 2L 4M | Best shields in game; huge mount; also fastImperial Duke rank; poor agility | 91 |
| Anaconda | Large | 1H 3L 2M 2S | Eight mounts; vast internals; no rankPonderous; far pricier | 88 |
| Imperial Clipper this | Large | 2L 2M | — this hull (baseline) | 79 |
| Type-10 Defender | Large | 4L 3M 2S | Highest armour; nine mounts; superb AXVery slow; feeble shields | 78 |
Among large combat ships the Clipper is the outlier — the fast skirmisher in a class of heavy battleships. The others out-gun and out-tank it comprehensively, but none can match its speed and agility. Choose it for hit-and-run flair and value; choose the others to stand and grind.
| Ship | Class | Hardpoints | Pros & cons vs Imperial Clipper | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fer-de-Lance | Medium | 1H 4M | Elite agility and alpha; medium pad; cheaperTiny internals; short range | 93 |
| Krait Mk II | Medium | 3L 2M | SLF bay; agile; medium pad; bigger batterySlower top speed than the Clipper | 90 |
| Mamba | Medium | 1H 2L 2S | Even faster; huge-mount alpha; medium padFragile; poor agility for its speed | 89 |
| Corsair | Medium | 3L 3M | Six guns; fast; medium pad; no rankPricier; not as fast as the Clipper | 85 |
| Federal Assault Ship | Medium | 2L 2M | Fast, agile, tough; medium padFederal rank; less speed and room | 84 |
For a fast, agile fighter the top mediums — especially the FDL and Mamba — offer comparable or better speed and far more firepower per credit, on a medium pad with no large-pad hassle. The Clipper's case is being a large ship that flies this way; if pad size doesn't matter to you, a fast medium is usually the rational pick.
At ~21M Cr the Clipper is remarkably cheap for a large ship — less than many mediums — gated only by the modest Imperial Baron rank. Its shallow hardpoints keep the combat outfitting bill low.
It's a fine fast brawler to fly while climbing Imperial rank: the same grind you're on toward Squire and the Achenar permit will unlock and then surpass the Baron rank it needs, and the Clipper makes the journey quick and stylish.
A large ship for the price of a medium, gated only by a low Imperial rank — a bargain skirmisher that doubles as an Imperial-rank brawler.
A fast skirmisher fit that leans on speed and a bi-weave buffer. Initial is buy-only; A-rated is the combat-ready baseline; Engineered applies the house combat pattern weighted to speed and shields.

With no military slots and modest shields, the Clipper survives by not getting hit — build a bi-weave buffer and a couple of reinforcements, but lean on speed and repositioning rather than trying to tank a stand-up fight.
Earn Baron, buy the hull (~21M Cr), and fit a stock shield generator plus a single shield booster — bulkheads stay stock Lightweight Alloy, and every reinforcement and spare utility slot stays empty until A-rating.
Arm the four mounts buy-only with gimballed pulse lasers and multi-cannons; the shield-stripping beam laser and the buy-only Military Grade Composite bulkhead arrive with the A-rated fit.
Lean on the speed immediately — close, strike and disengage rather than brawling.
A-rating priority for a fast skirmisher:
The Clipper lives by its pace — A-rate and engineer thrusters before anything else so it always dictates range and can escape a losing fight.

Moderate — standard combat G5s on only four guns, so lighter than the heavy warships. With a complete inventory this is spend, not farm. Ask for exact per-blueprint counts if needed.
Approximate progression across the three states (figures are representative, not exact rolls):
| Stat | Initial | A-rated | Engineered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top speed (boost) | 388 m/s | 388 m/s | ~460 m/s |
| Agility | excellent | excellent | excellent (for large) |
| Shield (MJ) | ~240 | ~340 | ~650 |
| Sustained DPS | medium-high | medium-high | medium-high |
| Tank | modest | fair | fair (hull-stacked) |
Engineering pushes boost past 450 m/s while keeping the Clipper's class-leading agility — a large ship that out-runs and out-turns most mediums. Military Grade Composite bulkheads (Heavy Duty G5) over a four-package Hull Reinforcement stack lift the tank from paper-thin to a usable buffer, and dropping the dead-weight surface scanner for a size-1 HRP keeps every internal earning its slot. The Clipper still wins by speed and repositioning, not by standing in the fire.
The Imperial Clipper is the fast skirmisher of the large class: the quickest big ship in the game, agile enough to fly like a medium, beautiful and cheap. Only four hardpoints, no military slots and a large-pad-only footprint keep it mid-pack for raw combat — but for hit-and-run flair and value, and as a stylish Imperial-rank brawler, nothing its size flies like it.
