E:D Black Box
The original Python makes a credible anti-Xeno medium: three large mounts for AX multi-cannons, two mediums for Gauss, ten optionals to layer Guardian hull and module reinforcement, and a genuinely tough frame — all with no rank gate, a medium pad and a hull under 56M Cr. It loses ground to the purpose-built mediums because it has no military slots, only four utilities, and turns too slowly to dodge an Interceptor's lightning the way a Chieftain or Krait can. It tanks the hits instead.
This ship's 1–100 suitability rating reflects its fully-engineered fit for this role, scored against every ship in the role. See how ships are rated.
Point the most flexible medium in the game at the Thargoids and you get a tough, accessible AX hunter. The Python brings three large hardpoints for AX/Guardian multi-cannons, two mediums for Gauss, four utilities and ten optional internals — deep enough to layer Guardian hull and module reinforcement, caustic kit and a strong bi-weave shield. With no rank gate, a medium pad and a hull under 56M Cr, it's one of the easiest AX warships to get into a Conflict Zone.
The reason it sits at 80 rather than higher on the AX medium ladder is specific and honest: the Python has no military slots, so every Guardian Module Reinforcement has to come out of an optional that would otherwise hold tank or cargo. It carries only four utility mounts — tight for a full Xeno-scanner, caustic-sink, heat-sink and shield-booster kit — and it turns ponderously, so it cannot dodge an Interceptor's lightning the way a Chieftain or Krait does. Its case is durability and value: it absorbs the hits a lighter hull evades.
Affordable, no-rank anti-Xeno work: standing in AX Conflict Zones, learning Interceptor hearts on a forgiving tank, and any AX sortie where a cheap, durable medium that also hauls or mines between fights matters more than peak evasion.
Four things make the Python a workable medium Xeno hunter:
The Python has no military slots, so every Guardian Module Reinforcement comes out of an optional, and it carries only four utilities — a tight budget for the full AX defensive kit. It's slow and turns poorly, so it cannot dodge an Interceptor's lightning like a Chieftain or Krait; it must absorb it. Its case is a tough, cheap, no-rank platform, not an evasive one.
A tough, no-rank, sub-56M-Cr AX medium leads on hull depth and three large mounts plus two Gauss, but ponderous 230/300 m/s agility is the limiter that holds it to 80.
The 80/100 headline is a verdict against the anti-Xeno role's priority-ordered factors. Each factor carries a weight (its share of 100); this hull earns part of each based on how it performs against the whole field. The points sum to the rating.
| Role factor | Score | Why this score |
|---|---|---|
| Hardpoints for Gauss | 21/25 | 3L 2M layout gives only two Gauss-capable mediums (Gauss caps at size 2, so the three large mounts can't take it); enough for steady heart damage but well short of the Federal Gunship's five-mount Gauss battery. |
| Heat capacity & management | 16/20 | Four utilities allow one heat-sink launcher and a thermal-resistant booster, and the class-7 plant takes Thermal Spread, but the heavy 468-armour frame and power-hungry Gauss/AX guns leave no surplus thermal margin. |
| Hull tank & reinforcement room | 20/20 | Ten optionals (6·6·6·5·5·4·3·3·2·1) plus 468 base armour give the deepest reinforcement room in the AX medium class, layering Guardian HRP/MRP and a class-6 bi-weave; the catch is zero military slots, so every MRP eats an optional. |
| Agility | 14/25 | 230 m/s top / 300 boost and ponderous yaw mean it cannot dodge an Interceptor's lightning the way the Chieftain, Krait or Challenger do; even Dirty Drives only recover modest agility on the heavy hull. The clear weakness. |
| Caustic handling & support slots | 9/10 | Only four utility mounts is a tight budget for the full Xeno-scanner / caustic-sink / heat-sink / booster kit, but the ten optionals absorb a decon limpet and stacked Guardian HRP for caustic resistance, partly compensating. |
| Weighted total | 80/100 | Matches the headline suitability rating for this ship in this role. |
Weights are an editorial decomposition of the role's stated priority order — not an in-game formula. Bar length shows how fully each factor is earned; the longest factors carried the score, the shortest are where it gave points away. See how ships are rated.
Both tables rate ships for anti-Xeno combat specifically. The role column is the hardpoint loadout — the basis for an AX weapon suite. Evasion, hardening and heat management matter as much as raw mounts.
| Ship | Class | Hardpoints | Pros & cons vs Python | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alliance Chieftain | Medium | 2L 1M 3S | Far more agile; dodges lightning; military slots; cheapLess internal room; smaller tank | 90 |
| Krait Mk II | Medium | 3L 2M | Same mounts; more agile; SLF bay; bigger shieldsNo military slots either; pricier | 89 |
| Alliance Challenger | Medium | 1L 3M 3S | Agile tank; 3 military slots for hardening; no rankFewer big AX guns; less cargo flexibility | 88 |
| Python Mk II | Medium | 4L 2M | Four large AX mounts; faster; combat-tunedPricier; only six optionals; no military slots | 84 |
| Federal Gunship | Medium | 1L 4M 2S | Maximum Gauss mounts; very tough; military slotsSluggish; Federal rank gate | 82 |
| Python this | Medium | 3L 2M | — this hull (baseline) | 80 |
| Alliance Crusader | Medium | 1L 2M 3S | SLF bay; 3 crew; military slotsSlower; fewer large AX guns | 79 |
| Federal Assault Ship | Medium | 2L 2M | Fast and agile; military slotsFederal rank; far less internal room | 77 |
Among the AX mediums the Python is the tough, accessible workhorse. The Chieftain, Krait and Challenger out-fight it because agility is survival in AX — they dodge the lightning the Python must soak, and most carry military slots it lacks. What the Python offers instead is three large mounts, the deepest internals in the class and no rank gate, ahead of the Crusader and Federal Assault Ship.
| Ship | Class | Hardpoints | Pros & cons vs Python | Rating |

| Imperial Cutter | Large | 1H 2L 4M | Highest shield tank in the game; military slotsImperial rank; large pad; even worse at dodging | 90 |
| Anaconda | Large | 1H 3L 2M 2S | Eight mounts; vast internals; military slot; no rankCostly; large pad; ponderous | 88 |
| Federal Corvette | Large | 2H 1L 2M 2S | Battleship tank; 2 military slots; eight utilitiesFederal Rear Admiral; ~188M Cr; large pad | 86 |
| Type-10 Defender | Large | 4L 3M 2S | Huge armour; many mounts; military slotsVery slow; feeble shields; large pad | 86 |
Step up to a large pad and the dedicated AX warships out-tank and out-harden the Python comfortably — military slots, more utilities and far greater durability. But they demand rank, cost, and a large pad. Until you want those, the Python delivers a tough, no-rank AX medium that lands anywhere and re-roles to hauling or mining for a fraction of any large ship's price.
At ~55.3M Cr the Python is mid-priced with no rank or permit gate — one of the cheapest viable AX warships. A full AX fit with AX/Guardian weapons, a capital-grade medium shield and layered Guardian reinforcement runs to roughly ~90M Cr A-rated, rising past ~120M Cr engineered, with a modest ~6M rebuy. The Guardian-tech grind for weapons and reinforcement is the real cost of admission, not credits.
It is an excellent first AX warship: cheap enough to rebuy without pain, tough enough to survive learning Interceptor hearts, and re-rollable to other work between sorties. If you want peak medium AX performance, the Chieftain or Krait dodge better for similar money; if you want one durable, no-rank hull that does AX among everything else, the Python is the value pick.
No rank gate and a ~6M rebuy make the Python the forgiving way into AX. The Guardian unlocks for weapons and reinforcement are the grind that matters — the hull and credits are the easy part.
A tough anti-Xeno medium that tanks rather than dodges: three large Enhanced AX Multi-Cannons, two fixed Guardian Gauss on the mediums for heart-kills, Guardian reinforcement layered into the ten optionals (no military slots), and a tight four-utility AX kit. Initial is buy-only cores; A-Rated adds the unlocked AX kit; Engineered hardens shield, hull, heat and mobility.

Unlike the Chieftain or Krait, the Python has no military slots, so Guardian Module and Hull Reinforcement come out of its ten optionals — trading tank depth for module hardening. Gauss on the mediums for heart damage, large AX multi-cannons on the big mounts, and a deliberate four-utility kit: Xeno scanner, caustic sink, heat sink and a thermal-resistant booster. It absorbs the lightning a lighter hull would dodge.
Initial is buy-only stock: the hull with its default Lightweight Alloy plating, plus the E-rated Power Plant, Thrusters, Frame Shift Drive, Life Support, Power Distributor and Sensors, and the stock 5C Fuel Tank. Nothing else is fitted at purchase.
Every hardpoint, utility and optional starts empty (— in the buy-only column). The three large AX multi-cannons and two Guardian Gauss can't be bought from a shipyard — they're unlocked at the relevant sites — and the class-6 bi-weave, Guardian reinforcement and the four-utility kit (Xeno scanner, caustic sink, heat sink, shield booster) all arrive in the A-Rated pass, not at purchase. The Military Grade Composite bulkhead is an outfitting buy too, not stock.
Stock, it has no weapons, no shield generator and no hardening — just the bare Lightweight Alloy hull; fly it that way only to ferry it to outfitting before the A-Rated step arms, plates and tanks it.
AX-fitting priority for the medium:
Because the Python has no military slots, the Military Grade bulkhead plus the Guardian MRP and HRP in the optionals are the whole defence — prioritise them over chasing extra cargo or shield depth. Module hardening is what keeps it firing when an Interceptor's lightning would otherwise strip a lighter medium.
AX engineering hardens shields, hull, heat and mobility; AX/Guardian weapons have limited engineering. Pin blueprints for remote G1→G5 application; visit in person for experimentals.

Heavy — standard combat G5s across the class-7 cores and a deep defensive suite, on top of the substantial Guardian-tech grind for AX weapons and reinforcement. The Guardian unlocks are the real cost; ship blueprints are standard. Ask for exact per-blueprint or unlock counts if needed.

Engineered, the Python is a tough, affordable AX medium: a shield into the low thousands, Military Grade plating pushed by HeavyDuty G5 and Guardian HRP into effective armour in the thousands, two Guardian MRP soaking the lightning, and three large AX guns plus Gauss that end Interceptors steadily. It stays slow — that's the trade — so it wins by absorbing the fire a lighter medium would dodge.
Wherever Thargoids are fought — AXCZ, Interceptor hunts, Scout clearing near a Maelstrom. The Python is the affordable, no-rank medium you bring when durability and value matter more than peak evasion.
The original Python is the affordable, no-rank AX workhorse: three large AX mounts, two Gauss, ten optionals to layer Guardian reinforcement, and a tough frame — all on a medium pad for under 56M Cr. It scores 80 — behind the Chieftain, Krait and Challenger — because it has no military slots, only four utilities, and turns too slowly to dodge an Interceptor's lightning the way they do. It earns the rating as the cheap, durable hull that tanks the hits instead, and re-roles to anything else between fights.
