E:D Black Box
No rank gate, a medium pad, and four large hardpoints — a big-gun count usually reserved for capitals — make the Python Mk II the hardest-hitting AX medium credits can buy. Two Gauss on the mediums and four large Guardian/AX guns put more heart-and-hull damage downrange than any other mid-pad hull. It scores 84 rather than higher because it carries zero military slots and only six optionals: Guardian Module Reinforcement, hull, shield and caustic kit all fight over the same six bays, so the module hardening that AX demands comes at the cost of the tank. It out-guns the agile leaders but can't both dodge like a Chieftain and harden like a Corvette.
This ship's 1–100 suitability rating reflects its fully-engineered fit for this role, scored against every ship in the role. See how ships are rated.
Point the best credit-bought medium gunship at the Thargoids and you get the hardest-hitting AX medium flying. The Python Mk II keeps the Python name but is a focused warship: four large hardpoints — a big-mount count most mediums never see — plus two mediums, six utilities, and a class-6 plant and distributor sized to run all of it. Since no huge AX weapon exists, four large mounts is effectively the practical AX firepower ceiling, and the Mk II reaches it from a medium pad with no rank grind.
The reason it sits at 84 rather than the top of the AX ladder is specific and honest: it has zero military slots and only six optional internals, by design. In AX, Thargoid lightning strips modules, so Guardian Module Reinforcement is near-mandatory — but on the Mk II it competes for the same six bays as the shield generator, hull reinforcement, caustic kit and decon limpets. You cannot both harden like a military-slotted hull and stay light enough to dodge like a Chieftain. The agile mediums with military slots (Chieftain, Challenger) and the high-DPS Krait Mk II edge ahead on that survivability balance; the Mk II answers with raw firepower and pad-and-credit access.
Firepower-led AX work: ending Interceptors fast with four large guns and two Gauss, AX Conflict Zones where you kill the Scout swarm quickly, and any commander who wants top-tier anti-Xeno damage without a navy rank grind. Fly it aggressively — speed and alpha, not attrition.
Four things make the Mk II a top-tier AX medium:
Zero military slots and only six optionals is the real constraint. Guardian Module Reinforcement — the hardening that keeps modules alive under Thargoid lightning — competes for the same bays as the shield, hull reinforcement, caustic sink storage and decon limpets. You cannot field a deep module-hardened tank and stay as light as a Chieftain. The Mk II's case is firepower and evasion, not the attritional module-tank a Corvette or Challenger brings.
Four large mounts plus two medium Gauss give it the biggest AX gun array on any medium pad with no rank gate; zero military slots and only six optionals — tank fighting weapons for bays — cap it below the agile, military-slotted leaders.
The 84/100 headline is a verdict against the anti-Xeno role's priority-ordered factors. Each factor carries a weight (its share of 100); this hull earns part of each based on how it performs against the whole field. The points sum to the rating.
| Role factor | Score | Why this score |
|---|---|---|
| Hardpoints for Gauss | 25/25 | 4L 2M is the practical AX firepower ceiling on a medium — no huge AX gun exists, and two mediums carry the medium-class Guardian Gauss pair for heart damage. More big-gun mounts than the Chieftain (2L), Krait Mk II (3L) or Challenger (1L). |
| Heat capacity & management | 17/20 | Class-6 plant and class-6 distributor run the full six-gun array without brown-out, and two heat-sink launchers among the six utilities buy silent-running resets. Only two Gauss (not the Gunship's four) keeps thermal load workable, but the large Guardian guns and Gauss still run hot. |
| Hull tank & reinforcement room | 12/20 | Zero military slots and only six optionals (6·4·3·2·1·1) force Guardian Module Reinforcement, hull, shield and caustic kit to share the same civilian bays; 280 base armour on a 450t hull. The clear limiter — no deep module-tank like a Challenger (3 mil) or Corvette. |
| Agility | 21/25 | 256/345 m/s with medium handling lets it reposition and break line-of-sight from lightning, far better evasion than any AX capital. Heavier and less nimble than the Chieftain, so it dodges well 'for the firepower' rather than leading the field on raw agility. |
| Caustic handling & support slots | 9/10 | Six utility mounts host Xeno Scanner, caustic-sink and heat-sink launchers and thermal/heavy-duty shield boosters, plus a decon-limpet controller in a size-1 bay. Generous utility count covers caustic clearing, but support kit competes with reinforcement for the same scarce optionals. |
| Weighted total | 84/100 | Matches the headline suitability rating for this ship in this role. |
Weights are an editorial decomposition of the role's stated priority order — not an in-game formula. Bar length shows how fully each factor is earned; the longest factors carried the score, the shortest are where it gave points away. See how ships are rated.
Both tables rate ships for anti-Xeno combat specifically. The role column is the hardpoint loadout — the basis for an AX weapon suite. Evasion, module hardening and heat management matter as much as raw mounts.
| Ship | Class | Hardpoints | Pros & cons vs Python Mk II | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alliance Chieftain | Medium | 2L 1M 3S | Superb agility dodges lightning; military slot; cheapFewer big mounts; lower raw firepower | 90 |
| Krait Mk II | Medium | 3L 2M | High DPS; SLF bay; more internal room and rangeOne fewer large mount; no military slot either | 89 |
| Alliance Challenger | Medium | 1L 3M 3S | Agile tank; three military slots for hardeningOnly one large mount; less alpha | 88 |
| Python Mk II this | Medium | 4L 2M | — this hull (baseline) | 84 |
| Corsair | Medium | 3L 3M | Six mounts; modern hull; strong all-rounderNewer; AX build knowledge still maturing | 84 |
| Federal Gunship | Medium | 1L 4M 2S | Maximum Gauss mounts; very tough; military slotSluggish; Federal rank gate; less alpha | 82 |
Among AX mediums the Mk II is the firepower pick. The Chieftain, Krait Mk II and Challenger rate higher because in AX evasion and module hardening are survival — and they bring military slots and lighter hulls the Mk II lacks. What the Mk II offers instead is four large mounts: the biggest AX gun array a medium can carry, killing Interceptors faster than any of them. The missing military slots are exactly what hold it a few points back.

| Type-10 Defender | Large | 4L 3M 2S | More mounts; huge armour; military slots; no rankVery slow; feeble shields; large pad | 86 |
The large warships out-tank and out-harden the Mk II — military slots, capital armour and deep internals let them absorb the lightning the Mk II must dodge or out-pace. What they cannot do is land on a medium pad or skip the rank and credit grind. For most of a large ship's AX killing power, from a medium pad, with no rank gate, the Python Mk II is the value play.
The hull is ~64.7M Cr — not cheap — but it carries no rank or permit gate, so it's open to any commander with the credits. A full AX fit with Guardian/AX weapons, a capable bi-weave and Guardian reinforcement runs to ~95M Cr A-rated, rising past ~120M Cr engineered, with a modest ~6M rebuy to budget for. The real cost beyond credits is the Guardian-tech and AX-weapon unlock grind shared by every anti-Xeno ship.
That makes it the most accessible top-tier AX platform: no Federal or Imperial grind, just money. If you want elite anti-Xeno firepower without a navy ladder, this is the medium — though new AX pilots should still learn the dance in a cheaper, more forgiving Chieftain before committing this much.
Faulcon DeLacy offers the Python Mk II as an ARX pre-built package, but no variant is AX-specific. If you took one, never strip the stock cores — add to open slots and engineer the cores in place — then unlock Guardian and AX weapons at the relevant sites and outfit it for anti-Xeno work normally. For most commanders, simply buying the hull and fitting it AX is cleaner.
A firepower-led AX medium working within the hard six-optional / zero-military constraint. Gauss on the two mediums for heart damage; four large mounts carry Guardian/AX guns; the six optionals split between a bi-weave shield and the Guardian reinforcement that has nowhere else to go. Initial is buy-only; A-Rated adds the unlocked AX kit; Engineered hardens the shield, cores and mobility — AX/Guardian weapons and Guardian reinforcement take no blueprints, so the gains come from the ship systems.

With no military slots, Guardian Module Reinforcement has to live in the civilian optionals alongside the shield and hull kit. Put two Gauss on the mediums for heart damage, four large Guardian/AX guns on the big mounts (no huge AX gun exists), and run caustic and heat kit hard. Fly it to dodge — you cannot stack the module-tank a Corvette or Challenger can.
Buy the hull — no rank needed — then unlock Guardian and AX weapons at the relevant sites; there is no off-the-shelf AX gun to slot first.
Out of the box only the stock cores come fitted: the E-rated Power Plant, Thrusters, Frame Shift Drive, Life Support, Power Distributor and Sensors, the stock 4C Fuel Tank, and the default Lightweight Alloy bulkhead. Every hardpoint, utility and optional internal stays empty (— in the buy-only column).
The reason is that the whole AX suite — the two Gauss, the four large Guardian/AX guns, the bi-weave shield, and the Guardian hull and module reinforcement — is unlock-gated, so there is nothing to slot buy-only. Those bays wait for the A-rated pass once the Guardian and AX unlocks are done.
AX-fitting priority for a firepower-led medium:
Four large guns plus two Gauss will brown out anything less than an A-rated, Charge-Enhanced distributor. A-rate and engineer it before chasing reinforcement — the firepower is the Mk II's whole AX case.
AX engineering hardens shields, heat and mobility; AX/Guardian weapons and the Guardian hull reinforcement carry no blueprints. Pin blueprints for remote G1→G5 application; visit in person for experimentals.

Heavy — G5 across class-6 cores and a thermal-resistant defensive suite, on top of the substantial Guardian-tech grind for weapons and reinforcement. The Guardian unlocks are the real cost; ship blueprints are standard. Ask for exact per-blueprint or unlock counts if needed.

Engineered, the Python Mk II pairs the biggest AX gun array a medium can field with a shield into the low thousands of effective points, a Military Grade Composite bulkhead pushed by Heavy Duty + Deep Plating, and Guardian HRP on top — enough armour into the low thousands, plus the speed to dodge much of the lightning. What it can't do is stack module hardening the way a military-slotted hull does — with no military slots the bulkhead and Guardian reinforcement are its only hardening — so it wins by killing fast and staying mobile, not by standing in the fire.
Wherever Thargoids are fought — AXCZ, Interceptor hunts, Maelstrom and Titan ops. The Mk II is the medium you bring when the plan is to out-damage the fight, from a pad and rank anyone can reach.
The Python Mk II is the hardest-hitting AX medium credits can buy: four large mounts and two Gauss put more anti-Xeno damage downrange than any other mid-pad hull, with no rank gate to earn it. It scores 84 — behind the agile, military-slotted Chieftain, Krait Mk II and Challenger — because zero military slots and only six optionals mean the module hardening AX demands always costs the tank. Fly it for firepower and evasion, not attrition, and it's an outstanding anti-Xeno choice.
