The Alliance bruiser turned Xeno-hunter — three military slots of Guardian hardening on a budget medium

The Crusader brings the one stat AX rewards most: three military slots, the most of any medium, all of them taking Guardian Module Reinforcement — the hardening that keeps your modules alive through Thargoid lightning. Add the Alliance tank hull, a fighter-bay decoy and no rank gate, and you have a cheap, durable anti-Xeno platform. It sits a few points behind the Chieftain because it is the slowest Alliance medium, carries the lowest base shield, and has only four utility mounts — a real squeeze once the Xeno scanner, caustic sink and heat sink are fitted.

This ship's 1–100 suitability rating reflects its fully-engineered fit for this role, scored against every ship in the role. See how ships are rated.

01

Role & Overview

Take the Alliance trio's tank chassis and count military slots: the Crusader has three — one more than the Challenger, two more than most mediums — and every one of them accepts Guardian Module Reinforcement. In anti-Xeno work that matters more than almost anything: Thargoid lightning strips and disables modules, and a stack of Guardian MRP is what keeps your thrusters, distributor and weapons online when lesser ships are flying home crippled. On top of that the Crusader keeps the tough Alliance hull, adds a ship-launched-fighter bay you can deploy as a decoy to split a swarm, and gates behind no rank at all. Arm the large mount with an AX multi-cannon, the two mediums with Guardian Gauss for heart damage, and you have a cheap, hard-to-kill Xeno hunter.

It rates 79 rather than joining the Chieftain at the top of the medium AX ladder for three honest reasons. It is the slowest Alliance medium with the lowest base shield, so it cannot weave out of a Cyclops' lightning the way a Chieftain can — and in AX, evasion is survival. It carries only four utility mounts, which a Xeno scanner, caustic sink and heat sink fill almost completely, leaving little room for the shield-booster suite. And with a single large hardpoint its raw AX firepower trails the heavier hulls. What it offers in return is module hardening and a fighter decoy no other budget medium matches.

Where this hull shines

Attritional, hardening-first AX: holding a position in an AX Conflict Zone, surviving the module-stripping lightning of Cyclops and Basilisk hunts, and any sortie where a deployed fighter splitting Thargoid attention buys the time a kill takes.

Four things make the Crusader a credible Xeno hunter:

The ceiling, stated honestly

The Crusader is the slowest Alliance medium with the lowest base shield, so it cannot dodge an Interceptor's lightning like a Chieftain — and AX rewards evasion. Its four utility mounts barely fit the mandatory Xeno scanner, caustic sink and heat sink, leaving almost no room for shield boosters. With one large hardpoint, raw AX firepower also trails the heavier hulls. Its case is module hardening and a decoy, not speed or shields.

03

Why This Rating

Scorecard

Role-leading module hardening — three class-4 military slots of Guardian MRP, the most of any medium — on a tough 540-armour hull; held to 79 by being the slowest Alliance medium with the lowest base shield and only four utilities.

The 79/100 headline is a verdict against the anti-Xeno role's priority-ordered factors. Each factor carries a weight (its share of 100); this hull earns part of each based on how it performs against the whole field. The points sum to the rating.

Role factorScoreWhy this score
Hardpoints for Gauss19/25
1L 2M 3S gives two medium Guardian Gauss mounts plus a large AX multi-cannon and three Guardian-shard smalls; solid but trails the Challenger (3 medium) and Gunship (4 medium) Gauss capacity, so heart-DPS ceiling is mid-pack.
Heat capacity & management17/20
Fixed Gauss runs hot, but the 6A plant with Overcharged + Thermal Spread and a Heat Sink Launcher manage it well; the squeeze is fitting that heat sink within only four utilities alongside scanner and caustic sink.
Hull tank & reinforcement room19/20
Three class-4 military slots — the most of any medium — all take Guardian MRP, and the 6·5·3·3·2·2·1 optionals plus 540 base armour leave deep room for Guardian HRP, pushing effective armour past ~2,500; role-leading hardening.
Agility16/25
180/300 m/s makes it the slowest Alliance medium with the lowest base ~126 MJ shield; even Dirty Drive thrusters only reach 'fair' dodge, so it cannot weave out of Interceptor lightning the way the Chieftain can — the clear limiter in a role where evasion is survival.
Caustic handling & support slots8/10
Caustic sink plus stacked Guardian HRP give strong caustic resistance, and the SLF bay adds a swarm decoy no other budget medium has; only four utility mounts cap support depth, leaving one slot for a single shield booster after scanner/caustic/heat kit.

How to read it

Weights are an editorial decomposition of the role's stated priority order — not an in-game formula. Bar length shows how fully each factor is earned; the longest factors carried the score, the shortest are where it gave points away. See how ships are rated.

04

How It Compares

Both tables rate ships for anti-Xeno combat specifically. The role column is the hardpoint loadout — the basis for an AX weapon suite. Evasion, hardening and heat management matter as much as raw mounts.

Among the medium AX hulls the Crusader is the hardening specialist: three military slots and a fighter decoy, but the slowest hull and lowest shield of the family. The Chieftain out-dodges it, the Challenger out-shields and out-guns it with the same military count, and the Krait out-damages it — which is why all three rate higher. Where the Crusader wins is keeping its modules alive and splitting a swarm with an SLF.

The large AX platforms out-tank and out-gun the Crusader outright, but each demands a large pad and most demand a rank grind and ten times the credits. The Crusader is the medium-pad, no-rank, ~22M-Cr way to get serious Guardian module hardening into an AX fight — not the toughest Xeno hull, but the cheapest one that hardens like the big ships do.

At ~22M Cr the Crusader is one of the cheapest hulls that can field a full Guardian-hardened AX fit, and it sits behind no rank or permit — only the Guardian and AX weapon unlocks every Xeno hull needs. A complete AX fit with three Guardian MRP, Gauss and AX multi-cannons, a bi-weave shield and a fighter bay runs to roughly ~45M Cr A-rated, rising past ~65M Cr engineered, with a low ~3M rebuy that makes mistakes cheap to learn from.

That cheap rebuy and the absence of any rank gate make the Crusader a strong first dedicated AX ship: hard enough to survive the learning curve, cheap enough that a death costs little. The real price of admission is the Guardian-tech grind for the weapons and reinforcement — the same toll every AX hull pays.

Hardening on a budget

~65M Cr engineered plus the Guardian unlocks buys three military slots of module hardening on a medium pad with no rank gate — AX survivability the budget Chieftain can't quite match. Factor the Guardian-tech grind, not the credits, as the real cost.

3-State Loadout

A hardened AX gunboat: an Enhanced AX multi-cannon on the large mount, Guardian Gauss on the mediums for heart damage, Guardian shards on all three smalls, every military slot filled with Guardian Module Reinforcement, and a fighter-bay decoy. Initial is buy-only cores; A-Rated adds the unlocked AX kit; Engineered hardens the shield, hull, heat and mobility. The four utilities are the tight spot — Xeno scanner, caustic sink and heat sink leave one slot for a shield booster.

Harden, then decoy

The Crusader's whole AX case is its three military slots — fill all three with Guardian Module Reinforcement so the lightning can't disable you. Put Gauss on the mediums for heart damage, an Enhanced AX multi-cannon on the large mount, and Guardian Hull Reinforcement across the optionals. The four utilities are tight: scanner, caustic and heat kit come first, then one shield booster. Run the SLF as a decoy when a swarm converges.

07

Initial Loadout — Buy-Only Plan

Buy-only, the Crusader fits just its stock core internals and the hull she ships with: a 6E Power Plant, 6E Thrusters, 5E Frame Shift Drive, 5E Life Support, 6E Power Distributor, 4E Sensors, the 4C Fuel Tank and the stock Lightweight Alloy bulkheads. There is no rank to grind first.

Every hardpoint stays empty — the large AX multi-cannon mount, both Guardian Gauss mediums and the three Guardian-shard smalls all wait on AX and Guardian weapon unlocks that no shipyard sells.

The four utilities, all three military slots, the bi-weave shield, the fighter hangar and the Guardian Hull Reinforcement optionals sit at “—” as well, until the Guardian and AX kit is unlocked. Buy-only, she leaves the pad as a bare Lightweight-Alloy hull on E-rated cores — every part that makes her an AX platform, including the heavier bulkheads, comes later.

08

A-Rated Loadout — Upgrade Plan

AX-fitting priority for the gunboat:

Hardening is the case

The Crusader earns its rating by surviving the lightning, not dodging it — prioritise the three Guardian MRP, Mil-grade bulkheads and a layered shield/hull tank over chasing DPS its single large mount can't deliver anyway. The 5D Fighter Hangar is a decoy/aggro tool that needs a crewmate; flying solo against interceptors, swap it for a 5D Guardian HRP to deepen the hull-tank instead.

09

Engineering Plan

AX engineering hardens shields, hull, heat and mobility; AX/Guardian weapons have limited engineering. Pin blueprints for remote G1→G5 application; visit in person for experimentals.

Recommended order

Material intensity (qualitative)

Moderate — standard G5s across class-6 cores plus a thermal-resistant defensive suite, on top of the substantial Guardian-tech grind for weapons and reinforcement. The Guardian unlocks are the real cost; ship blueprints are standard. Ask for exact per-blueprint or unlock counts if needed.

Key Stat Upgrades

Approximate progression across the three states (figures are representative, not exact rolls):

AX firepowermediummediummedium (one large mount)
Agility (dodge)poorfairfair (slowest Alliance)

Engineered, the Crusader is a hard little Xeno gunboat: a usable shield buffer, effective armour into the thousands — Mil-grade bulkheads with a HeavyDuty G5 roll under five Guardian HRP — and, the point, three Guardian MRP soaking the lightning that disables lesser ships. It cannot dodge like a Chieftain, so it leans on hardening and a fighter decoy to outlast the fight rather than out-fly it.

11

Key Activities & Where To Do Them

Getting started
  • AX Conflict Zones. Hold a position with hardened modules while the SLF splits the swarm and lighter ships dart.
  • Cyclops & Basilisk hunts. Hold Gauss on a heart; three Guardian MRP keep your modules online through the lightning.
  • Decoy tactics. Deploy the fighter to draw a Thargoid's attacks while you keep firing.
Advanced
  • Wing AX support. The hardened anchor that stays online while agile mediums dodge and harass.
  • Maelstrom & Titan sorties. Module hardening and a low rebuy make extended, dangerous runs cheap to repeat.
  • Crewed AX. A gunner can run the SLF and a turret while you focus on hearts — the Alliance crew chassis pays off in AX too.
Generic example operations

Wherever Thargoids are fought — AXCZ, Interceptor hunts, Maelstrom and Titan ops. The Crusader is the budget hull you bring when the plan is to harden up and outlast the lightning rather than dodge it.

12

Field Notes — What Else To Know

Verdict

The Alliance Crusader is the budget AX hardening platform: three military slots of Guardian Module Reinforcement — the most of any medium — on a tough hull with a fighter-bay decoy and no rank gate. It scores 79, a few points behind the Chieftain and Challenger, because it is the slowest Alliance medium with the lowest base shield and only four utility mounts, so it can't dodge the lightning the way the role rewards. Buy it when you want serious module hardening cheap, and fight by outlasting the swarm rather than out-flying it.
