E:D Black Box
A famously nimble small-pad hull pressed into anti-Xeno work, and the fit is defined by what it cannot carry. The Vulture has only two large hardpoints and no medium or small mounts, so it cannot mount a single Guardian Gauss Cannon — the role's heart-killer, which caps at medium. Its AX battery is limited to two large AX multi-cannons or a Guardian Shard, and only two guns at that. Elite agility and a rare class-5 military slot keep it viable as a cheap scout-clearer, but a power-starved plant and the thinnest heart-DPS in the field pin it near the bottom of the AX ladder.
This ship's 1–100 suitability rating reflects its fully-engineered fit for this role, scored against every ship in the role. See how ships are rated.
Anti-Xeno combat is a discipline of evasion and precision: Thargoid Interceptors strip modules with lightning, eat hulls with caustic clouds, and reward pilots who can dodge and place clean shots on exposed hearts. Guardian Gauss Cannons are the heart-killers — but they fit only small and medium mounts, and the Vulture has neither. Its two hardpoints are both Large, so the AX battery is limited to two large AX multi-cannons or a Guardian Shard Cannon. Two guns, none of them Gauss-capable, is the thinnest heart-damage layout in the rated field.
What the Vulture keeps is its defining strength — elite agility — and one genuine bright spot for a small hull: a class-5 military slot, big enough for a size-5 Guardian reinforcement block that most rated mediums can't match. But the optionals are shallow (5·4·2·1·1·1·1), only four utility mounts carry the whole support kit, and the class-4 power plant cannot comfortably run two large guns plus the shield. That is why it lands at 44 — a cheap, agile hull that clears scouts and skirmishes light Interceptors, but cannot mount the weapon the role is built around.
Budget scout-clearing and light-Interceptor skirmishing: cheap entry into anti-Xeno work, small-pad reach to any outpost, and enough agility to dodge the lightning. Step up to an agile AX medium the moment you want real heart damage.
What decides the Vulture's Thargoid fight:
Two guns, no Gauss, and a class-4 power plant that struggles to run them alongside the shield mean heart damage is slow and power is tight. Four utility mounts and shallow optionals cap the caustic/support kit, and the hull tanks lightning far worse than the military-slotted mediums. The Vulture is a cheap skirmisher and scout-clearer — not a Titan boat.
Two large hardpoints and no medium/small mount mean the Vulture cannot fit a single Guardian Gauss Cannon, the role's heart-killer; elite agility and a rare class-5 military slot keep it a viable cheap scout-clearer, but the thinnest heart-DPS of any rated AX hull pins it at 44.
The 44/100 headline is a verdict against the anti-Xeno role's priority-ordered factors. Each factor carries a weight (its share of 100); this hull earns part of each based on how it performs against the whole field. The points sum to the rating.
| Role factor | Score | Why this score |
|---|---|---|
| Hardpoints for Gauss | 6/25 | Two Large mounts and nothing smaller: Guardian Gauss caps at medium, so the hull cannot carry the role's key precision weapon at all, and only two guns fire (large AX multi-cannon plus a Guardian Shard). The weakest heart-damage layout in the rated field, below even the Kestrel's two small Gauss. |
| Heat capacity & management | 10/20 | 237 heat capacity on a 230t hull with a class-4 power-starved plant and only one heat-sink among four utilities; the two large AX weapons and Shard run hot with almost no thermal margin, though the two-gun count keeps peak load modest. |
| Hull tank & reinforcement room | 12/20 | A rare class-5 military slot (bigger than most rated mediums' class-4) takes a size-5 Guardian Hull Reinforcement, and 288 stock armour beats the bottom hulls, but shallow 5-4-2-1-1-1-1 optionals cap how high the reinforcement stack goes. |
| Agility | 13/25 | Class-leading turn rate lets it dodge Interceptor lightning and hold guns on an exposed heart, but a 210/340 m/s hull is slower than every fast AX medium (Chieftain, Krait, FDL) at opening distance from a swarm, so raw evasion trails the field leaders. |
| Caustic handling & support slots | 3/10 | Only four utility mounts carry the whole kit (Xeno scanner, caustic sink, heat sink, one shield booster) and shallow internals leave no cargo for a decontamination limpet and no room for a fighter-bay decoy; support is the thinnest of the rated field. |
| Weighted total | 44/100 | Matches the headline suitability rating for this ship in this role. |
Weights are an editorial decomposition of the role's stated priority order — not an in-game formula. Bar length shows how fully each factor is earned; the longest factors carried the score, the shortest are where it gave points away. See how ships are rated.
Every table rates ships for AX specifically, split by landing-pad class. The Hardpoints column is the hardpoint loadout — the mount count for a Gauss suite; the rating is the same 1–100 suitability verdict used across the site.

The medium-pad AX field (13 rated), led by Alliance Chieftain (90) — cheaper hulls and tighter pads. They undercut this hull on the numbers, but sit a pad class away.
At ~4.7M Cr with no rank or permit gate, the Vulture is the cheapest hull that can meaningfully enter anti-Xeno work. The AX and Guardian weapons and the Guardian reinforcement modules require the Guardian tech-broker unlocks — a prerequisite for any AX ship, not specific to this one.
The value case is real but narrow: a few million credits and low rebuy make it a fearless scout-clearer. It will not carry you into sustained Interceptor or Titan fights — that is a medium's job.
Under 5M credits for a hull that can clear Thargoid scouts and skirmish light Interceptors. The ceiling is low, but so is the buy-in — a first AX hull for pilots who already fly a Vulture.
A budget anti-Xeno skirmisher built on the Vulture's elite agility. The two large hardpoints carry the AX battery — an Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon for sustained fire and a large Guardian Shard Cannon for burst — but the hull has NO medium or small mounts, so it cannot fit a single Guardian Gauss Cannon, the role's heart-killer. Initial is the buy-only bare hull; A-Rated bolts on the Thargoid kit and Guardian reinforcement; Engineered hardens mobility, shields and survival — the AX and Guardian weapons themselves carry no engineering.
| Slot | Initial · buy-only | A-Rated · no eng | Engineered | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hardpoints | ||||
| Large 1 | 3C AX Multi-Cannon (Fixed) | 3C Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | (No blueprint available) | Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon (gimballed) — the large mounts are the only hardpoints the Vulture has, so both AX weapons ride here; gimbals make sustained anti-Thargoid DPS easy to land. No weapon engineering exists. |
| Large 2 | 3C AX Multi-Cannon (Fixed) | 3C Guardian Shard Cannon (Fixed) | (No blueprint available) | Guardian Shard Cannon (large, fixed) — thermal burst against exposed hearts and scouts; the Vulture's agility makes the fixed mount workable. No blueprint available. Gauss will not fit — the hull has no medium/small mount. |
| Utility Mounts | ||||
| Utility 1 | 0E Shield Booster | 0E Xeno Scanner | (No blueprint available) | Xeno Scanner reads Thargoid type and exposed hearts; utility scanner, not engineerable. |
| Utility 2 | — | 0I Caustic Sink Launcher | G1 Ammo Capacity (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Ammo Capacity adds caustic-sink charges. Clears caustic damage without needing a cargo-fed decontamination limpet. |
| Utility 3 | — | 0I Heat Sink Launcher | G1 Ammo Capacity (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Ammo Capacity adds heat-sink charges. Dumps heat for silent running and burns off caustic in a pinch. |
| Utility 4 | — | 0A Shield Booster | G5 Thermal Resistant + Super Capacitors | Shield Booster — Thermal Resistant against Thargoid thermal fire, Super Capacitors adds raw MJ back; only one utility is left after scanner and the two sinks. |
| Core Internals | ||||
| Bulkheads | Lightweight Alloy | Military Grade Composite | G5 Heavy Duty + Deep Plating | |
| Power Plant | 4E Power Plant | 4A Power Plant | G5 Overcharged + Thermal Spread | The Vulture's chronic bottleneck — Overcharge it FIRST; two large AX guns plus the shield leave almost no margin. Thermal Spread bleeds the heat AX weapons and the Shard generate. |
| Thrusters | 5E Thrusters | 5A Thrusters | G5 Dirty Drive Tuning + Drag Drives | A-rated + Dirty Drive Tuning gives the agility that dodges Interceptor lightning — the single most important AX upgrade on this hull. |
| Frame Shift Drive | 4E Frame Shift Drive | 4A Frame Shift Drive | G5 Increased Range + Mass Manager | A-rated with Increased Range + Mass Manager to reach Thargoid airspace; pin Farseer's blueprint for remote application. |
| Life Support | 3E Life Support | 3A Life Support | G5 Lightweight (no experimental effect) | A-rated for the longest oxygen duration when a Thargoid strips the canopy; Lightweight trims the mass. No experimental effect. |
| Power Distributor | 5E Power Distributor | 5A Power Distributor | G5 Charge Enhanced + Super Conduits | A-rate and Charge-Enhance it — the Shard Cannon and AX Multi-Cannon drain the WEP capacitor fast; Super Conduits stretches each charge. |
| Sensors | 4E Sensors | 4D Sensors | G5 Lightweight (no experimental effect) | Drop to D and go Lightweight; AX fights are close-range, so save the mass and power. |
| Fuel Tank | 3C Fuel Tank | 3C Fuel Tank | (No blueprint available) | Stock C tank; fuel capacity is fixed and cannot be engineered. |
| Military Slots | ||||
| Military 1 | 5E Hull Reinforcement | 5D Guardian Hull Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | Guardian Hull Reinforcement in the class-5 military slot — a large caustic-resistant armour block, the single biggest survival gain the Vulture can make. Guardian tech is not engineerable. |
| Optional Internals | ||||
| Size 5 | 5E Shield Generator | 5C Bi-Weave Shield Generator | G5 Thermal Resistant + Fast Charge | Bi-Weave Shield (5C fast variant) regenerates quickly under fire; Thermal Resistant + Fast Charge against thermal Thargoid attacks. |
| Size 4 | 4E AFMU | 4A AFMU | G5 Shielded (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Shielded hardens the AFMU. Repairs modules stripped by Thargoid lightning between passes. |
| Size 2 | — | 2D Guardian Hull Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | Guardian Hull Reinforcement 2 — caustic-resistant armour; Guardian modules cannot be engineered. |
| Size 1 | — | 1D Guardian Module Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | Guardian Module Reinforcement spreads Thargoid module-stripping damage and adds caustic resistance; not engineerable. |
| Size 1 | — | 1D Guardian Hull Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | Guardian Hull Reinforcement 1 — small caustic-resistant armour block; armour stacks linearly so even a size-1 helps. |
| Size 1 | — | 1D Module Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | Module Reinforcement Package protects the internals from penetrating hits; not engineerable. |
| Size 1 | — | 1D Hull Reinforcement | G5 Heavy Duty + Deep Plating | Hull Reinforcement Package, Heavy Duty + Deep Plating for the cheapest effective-armour multiplier. |

The Vulture survives AX by out-flying the lightning, not soaking it. Dodge the Interceptor's attacks, clear caustic with the sink launcher and a heat-sink overheat, repair stripped modules with the AFMU, and watch the class-4 plant — two large AX guns plus the shield leave almost no power margin. With no Gauss mount and only two guns, heart damage is slow; this is a scout-clearing and light-Interceptor hull, not a Titan boat.
Buy the hull (~4.7M Cr); its stock Lightweight Alloy bulkheads stay for now — Military Grade is an A-rated upgrade. Fit a 5E shield generator, one 0E shield booster, a basic AFMU for module repair, and a 5E military-slot hull reinforcement.
Arm both large mounts buy-only with basic AX multi-cannons — they need no Guardian unlock and are enough to learn Thargoid fights. Set power priorities so weapons and shields don't brown out when you deploy hardpoints and boost.
A-rating priority for the AX Vulture — power first, always:
On the Vulture, power comes first — an Overcharged class-4 plant is the difference between two large AX guns that fire continuously and a ship that stalls mid-fight. The Guardian reinforcement and Thargoid kit come once the guns run.
The house AX pattern with a hard focus on power and mobility; the AX and Guardian weapons themselves are not engineerable. Pin blueprints for remote G1→G5 application; visit in person for experimentals.

Initial armour is stock Lightweight Alloy plus the one military-slot reinforcement (~450 raw). A-rated adds Military Grade Composite and a size-5 Guardian Hull Reinforcement with caustic resistance (~900 raw); engineered — Heavy Duty bulkhead and Deep Plating — the Vulture holds ~1,500 raw hull behind a fast-regen bi-weave and reaches ~430 m/s on boost. Heart DPS stays the flat limiter: two large guns, none of them Gauss-capable, is the least heart damage of any rated AX hull.
Any system in or near a Maelstrom's Thargoid-controlled space suits scout clearing; nearby rescue megaships sell AX weapons and repair modules. Keep an outpost with a small pad in reach for turn-ins.
The Vulture is the budget on-ramp to anti-Xeno work: cheap, agile and small-pad, but crippled for the role by two large hardpoints that cannot mount a single Guardian Gauss Cannon. It clears scouts and skirmishes light Interceptors well enough to justify its 44, and no rated AX hull costs less — but the moment you want real heart damage, an agile AX medium is the answer.
