E:D Black Box
The Kestrel's three large hardpoints make it a heavy AX gun platform for a small hull, but Guardian Gauss caps at medium size, so the heart-killing battery is limited to its two small mounts. Fast and nimble enough to dodge Interceptor lightning, it survives by evasion rather than tank — thin armour, one military slot and shallow optionals leave it the most fragile hull in the rated AX field. A capable scout-and-Cyclops skirmisher that trades durability for speed and reach.
This ship's 1–100 suitability rating reflects its fully-engineered fit for this role, scored against every ship in the role. See how ships are rated.
Anti-Xeno work is a discipline of evasion and precision: Thargoid Interceptors strip modules with lightning, eat hulls with caustic clouds, and reward pilots who can dodge and place clean shots on exposed hearts. The Kestrel Mk II brings genuine speed and small-pad access to that fight, and its three large hardpoints carry a heavy AX multi-cannon battery. But Guardian Gauss — the heart-killer — only fits small and medium mounts, and the Kestrel's only spare mounts are its two smalls, so the precision battery is thin.
It pays for its firepower and speed with survivability. Base armour is just 135, there is a single class-4 military slot, and the optionals are shallow (5·4·3·2·2·2·1) — less Guardian reinforcement room than any rated medium. It cannot soak Thargoid punishment the way a Chieftain or Challenger can; it stays alive by out-flying the lightning. That is why it lands at 60 — a real AX skirmisher, but the frailest and lightest-hitting of the field, best on scouts and lighter Interceptors rather than sustained Titan work.
Light, mobile anti-Xeno work: clearing Thargoid scout swarms, skirmishing Cyclops and Basilisk Interceptors, and any AX fight where speed and small-pad reach matter more than a deep tank. Step up to a medium for the heavier Interceptors.
What the Kestrel brings to a Thargoid fight — and what it doesn't:
Thin 135 armour, one military slot and a 190 t frame mean it hardens far less than any medium AX hull and runs hot feeding three large guns from a class-5 plant. It survives by out-flying the lightning, not by soaking it — misjudge a heart phase and the shallow tank gives out fast. Fly it light, fast, and disciplined on heat.
A fast, nimble small-pad AX skirmisher — three large Enhanced AX Multi-Cannons and the agility to dodge Interceptor lightning — held to 60 because Gauss caps at medium so heart damage rides only two small mounts, and a thin 135-armour, one-military-slot frame hardens far less than any rated medium.
The 60/100 headline is a verdict against the anti-Xeno role's priority-ordered factors. Each factor carries a weight (its share of 100); this hull earns part of each based on how it performs against the whole field. The points sum to the rating.
| Role factor | Score | Why this score |
|---|---|---|
| Hardpoints for Gauss | 15/25 | 3L 2S: Gauss caps at medium, so only the two small mounts take (small) Guardian Gauss while the three larges run Enhanced AX Multi-Cannons. Heavy sustained AX fire, but two small Gauss is the thinnest heart battery in the rated field. |
| Heat capacity & management | 11/20 | A 190 t hull with 237 heat capacity and a class-5 plant feeding three large AX guns plus two Gauss runs hot; only one heat-sink among four utilities, so trigger discipline is mandatory. |
| Hull tank & reinforcement room | 11/20 | One class-4 military slot (rare on a small) plus shallow 5·4·3·2·2·2·1 optionals, but just 135 base armour on a light frame — it hardens far less than the medium AX hulls and survives by evasion, not soak. |
| Agility | 19/25 | 271/360 m/s on a nimble small hull, past ~450 boost on Dirty Drives, dodges Interceptor lightning well — its whole survival case; still a step behind the very fastest AX mediums and it cannot out-turn a Chieftain. |
| Caustic handling & support slots | 4/10 | Four utilities carry Xeno Scanner, caustic sink, heat sink and a booster, but the shallow optionals leave little room to seat a decontamination limpet and Guardian reinforcement together. |
| Weighted total | 60/100 | Matches the headline suitability rating for this ship in this role. |
Weights are an editorial decomposition of the role's stated priority order — not an in-game formula. Bar length shows how fully each factor is earned; the longest factors carried the score, the shortest are where it gave points away. See how ships are rated.
Every table rates ships for AX specifically, split by landing-pad class. The Hardpoints column is the hardpoint loadout — the mount count for a Gauss suite; the rating is the same 1–100 suitability verdict used across the site.

The medium-pad AX field (13 rated), led by Alliance Chieftain (90) — cheaper hulls and tighter pads. They undercut this hull on the numbers, but sit a pad class away.
At ~13.8M Cr the hull carries no rank or permit gate, but the real access cost of an AX fit is the Guardian tech: Guardian Gauss Cannons and the Guardian reinforcement packages are unlocked at Guardian ruins and require Guardian materials, and the Enhanced AX Multi-Cannons come from Tech Brokers. Budget the material runs before the credits.
As an AX platform the Kestrel is a budget, small-pad option — cheaper than most medium AX hulls — justified when you value speed and universal pad access over a deep tank. If you can field a medium pad, a Chieftain buys far more survivability for a similar spend.
The credits are modest; the barrier is unlocking Guardian weapons and reinforcement at ruins. Do the Guardian material runs first, then the AX Kestrel comes together cheaply.
A small-pad anti-Xeno fit built on the Kestrel's speed: three large Enhanced AX Multi-Cannons for sustained fire, a Guardian Gauss pair on the two small mounts for heart damage, and Guardian reinforcement crammed into one military slot and shallow optionals. Initial is the buy-only bare hull; A-Rated bolts on the Thargoid kit and Guardian reinforcement; Engineered hardens mobility, shields and survival. The AX/Guardian weapons themselves carry no engineering — the gains are in flying and the ship modules.

| Hardpoints | ||||
| Large 1 | — | 3C Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | (No blueprint available) | Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon (gimballed) — the three large mounts are the Kestrel's AX main battery; gimbals make sustained anti-Thargoid DPS easy to land. No weapon engineering exists. |
| Large 2 | — | 3C Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | (No blueprint available) | Second large Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon for sustained kinetic AX damage on hearts and exertions; not engineerable. |
| Large 3 | — | 3C Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon (Gimballed) | (No blueprint available) | Third large Enhanced AX Multi-Cannon — a heavy sustained-fire array for a small hull, but they run hot together; not engineerable. |
| Small 1 | — | 1D Guardian Gauss Cannon (Fixed) | (No blueprint available) | Guardian Gauss Cannon (small, fixed) — the heart-killer. Gauss caps at medium and the Kestrel's only spare mounts are small, so heart damage rides two small Gauss. No blueprint. |
| Small 2 | — | 1D Guardian Gauss Cannon (Fixed) | (No blueprint available) | Second small Guardian Gauss Cannon completes the pair; fire in short bursts to manage heat and the WEP capacitor. Not engineerable. |

| Frame Shift Drive | 4E Frame Shift Drive | 4A Frame Shift Drive | G5 Increased Range + Mass Manager | A-rated; Increased Range + Mass Manager reach Thargoid airspace and Maelstroms; only a size-4 drive, so range is modest. |
| Life Support | 1E Life Support | 1A Life Support | G5 Lightweight (no experimental effect) | A-rated for a long oxygen timer after a canopy breach; Lightweight trims the size-1 module's mass; no experimental effect. |
| Power Distributor | 5E Power Distributor | 5A Power Distributor | G5 Charge Enhanced + Super Conduits | Charge Enhanced + Super Conduits feed the Gauss capacitor so the pair keeps firing; the class-5 distributor is the tightest system on the hull. |
| Sensors | 2E Sensors | 2D Sensors | G5 Lightweight (no experimental effect) | D-rated and Lightweight — AX fights are close-range, so save the mass for speed. |
| Fuel Tank | 4C Fuel Tank | 4C Fuel Tank | (No blueprint available) | Stock size-4 tank; fuel capacity is fixed and cannot be engineered. |

| Size 2 | — | 2D Guardian Module Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | Guardian Module Reinforcement spreads penetrating-hit damage across the internals; caustic-resistant, no blueprint. |
| Size 2 | — | 2A AFMU | G5 Shielded (no experimental effect) | Optional / low-priority — Shielded hardens the AFMU. Repairs stripped modules between fights. |
| Size 1 | — | 1D Guardian Hull Reinforcement | (No blueprint available) | A small Guardian HRP tops up effective armour where the last optional allows; not engineerable. |

The Kestrel survives AX by speed, not tank: dodge Interceptor lightning, line the two small Gauss on exposed hearts and let the three large AX guns hold sustained fire. Hardening is thin — one military slot plus a few Guardian blocks in the optionals — so manage heat hard on a light hull and disengage before the shallow armour matters.
Buy the hull on stock Lightweight Alloy and stock cores. The AX weapons matter first: arm the three large mounts with gimballed Enhanced AX Multi-Cannons and both small mounts with fixed Guardian Gauss Cannons, then fit a Xeno Scanner so you can read Interceptor hearts.
The bi-weave shield, Guardian reinforcement, decontamination limpet and the caustic/heat-sink launchers wait until the guns are paid off — but even unengineered, three large AX guns clear scout swarms and chip Cyclops hearts, so the buy-only fit is already useful on the lighter Thargoids.
Don't linger. With no reinforcement and a stock shield, the buy-only Kestrel has to disengage the moment a heart phase turns on it.
A-rating priority for a light AX skirmisher:
Fill the four utilities with a shield booster, Xeno Scanner, caustic-sink launcher and heat-sink launcher, and drop a decontamination limpet controller into a mid optional to strip caustic mid-fight.
A-rate the distributor and plant so the Gauss keep firing, then the thrusters so you keep dodging. The Guardian reinforcement is the only real tank a small hull can carry — but speed, not armour, is what keeps this ship alive.
The house anti-Xeno pattern on a small gunboat — weighted to mobility, heat and shields, since the AX and Guardian weapons take no engineering. Pin blueprints for remote G1→G5 application; visit in person for experimentals.

Engineered, the Kestrel keeps ~450 m/s of boost to dodge the lightning, a fast-charging bi-weave against thermal fire, and a Guardian-reinforced hull for caustic resistance. The weapons never change — AX and Guardian tech carry no blueprints — so the engineering budget goes entirely into flying, heat and survival. The heart battery stays at two small Gauss no matter how much you spend, which is the ceiling on this hull's AX ambitions.
Any Thargoid-active system with scout activity or a nearby AX Conflict Zone suits it. Rescue megaships and outpost stations in the affected bubble double as small-pad staging the Kestrel can use where mediums cannot dock.
The Kestrel Mk II is a fast, small-pad anti-Xeno skirmisher: three large AX guns and the speed to dodge Interceptor lightning, let down by only two Gauss-capable mounts and the thinnest tank in the field. It earns its place on scouts and lighter Interceptors, and its universal pad access is unmatched, but a medium is the more capable AX hull whenever you can field one. Fly it light, fast, and disciplined — and don't pick fights the shallow armour can't finish.
